Irrationality

Notes:

  • Rationality is when beliefs align with reality, and acting accordingly.
  • Irrationality (misalignment) can be from ignorance of reality or a lack of freedom to act in a rational way.
  • Possible reasons for someone apparently acting irrationality:
    • They are ignorant of reality;
    • They are not ignorant, but pressured, coerced, or want to act in a misaligned way;
    • They are acting rationally, but I am judging their actions based on my ignorance of reality;
    • They are acting rationally, and I am not ignorant, but pressured, coerced, or want to judge their actions as misaligned;
    • A combination of the above.
  • Ways that I am willingly irrational:
    • Eating to much, remaining overweight;
    • Procrastinating on priority work;
    • Not seeking truth, remaining ignorant in some aspects.
  • Why do I do this?
    • Is “ignorance bliss”?
    • Is rationality easier?
    • Peer pressure vs truth?
    • Allowing myself to agree with the opinion of someone I respect instead of questioning it?
    • Short-term happiness vs long-term happiness?
